But when I read a lot of other folks reviews, and a lot of commentary on various blogs on the internet for that matter, covering topics from A to Z, I feel it's necessary. "Big Sick Heart" is fiction. It's supposed to be primarily for entertainment, as a pastime, or whatever. OkayMike Markel as a story teller is a really superior talent. The plot of his stories, quite apart from how well they are told, runs from quite adequate to good, or maybe even a little better than just good. "Big Sick Heart" is good to better than good, as a story. How well the story is told is however outstanding. He tells his story with such apparent ease, even though there is no question in my mind that there was a lot of effort put into it. I don't want to wax too rhapsodic, but his style is "organic." To all apearances he is a "natural." He puts together a complex story, and the interaction between characters is full of psycholgical themes that run off in all directions, and yet it is so easy to read. Everything just flows together. However having said that, so far at least, he isn't turning out literature, but when, in whichever manner he chooses to go about it, he manages to come up with a really outstanding storyline, hang on to your hat! The lighting is so obviously waiting right there in the bottle.Specifically, regarding "Big Sick Heart:" The story is very solid, and well worth reading. One must bear in mind that this is a murder mystery, and it is perforce definitely dramatic here and there, but fortunately, drama or not, it doesn't sink into melodrama. It immediately engages the reader and it doesn't go all "thin" somewhere in the middle. It's a bit of tear jerker, and that's OK because it is entirely believable, with an essentially down to earth plot, that doesn't disappoint...particularly if one is looking for a nicely wrapped up story with a beginning, middle, and end. All three are there, and they fit quite nicely. The story does follow the oft over repeated formula of lots of stories within the story, but even so, they are handled with consumate ease...not one of them sticks out as perhaps being nothing more than "filler." To make it even better, the humor, if nearly always cynical, is unfailingly subtle and actualy funny. Of course certain things are funny to some people, while others just miss the point. Taste varies.Absent those readers who are brain dead...and for certain very few true readers fall into that category...the story will grab you right from the start, and you will enjoy it all the way through to the end. As a solid, decidedly professional job, "Big Sick Heart" delivers.7 of 7 people found the following review helpful.Love it!By MKMillerI started reading this book mainly because it was free! I love to read a lot and usually look for free books first. Many of the books which are free aren’t very good but this one was an exception. I really enjoyed it and subsequently purchased the next two books. I am hoping that Markel will continue this series and write more.I was really surprised to read the comments about the book not being believable. I totally disagree. I believe it is more about how some people are not comfortable with non-traditional gender roles. In this book the female was more mature, stronger and her personal life was a train wreck. On the other hand, the male was the kinder, gentler character—but still very believable.Additionally, the comment about how the female protagonist was an alcoholic but didn’t really exhibit all of the bad effects of alcoholism. This is entertainment, not real life! Think about all of the James Bond books and movies. James Bond drank like a fish but never showed any type of ill-effects from his alcohol use. He would down a few drinks then jump in his car and drive 100mph after the bad guy. Seriously, most of us want entertainment to counter all of our reality.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.Unconventional Detective Team! I have book two loaded up and ready to go!By julie whiteleyBig Sick Heart: A Detectives Seagate and Miner Mystery ( Detectives Seagate and Miner Mysteries #1) by Mike Markel is a 2014 publication. This novel had the nerve to tackle some pretty controversial issues. Stem cell research is of course hotly debated with people firmly on one side or the other. The debate can get really heated. Amazingly, this novel manages to pull off a mystery surrounding the complications of stem cell research without stepping on a hornet's nest. Here is the set up:Detective Karen Seagate and Detective Ryan Miner are partners working to solve the murder of a man, Arlen Hargerty, whose public stance on stem cell research and leader of a group called “Soul Savers” may have made him a few enemies. While on the lecture circuit with his wife, assistant and debate partner , Arlen is found murdered. The suspects are plenty as we will discover when the murder victim's corruption comes to light as well as his extramarital affair. Wife Mistress Debate Partner All are suspects, but the deeper the detectives dig, the more enemies they uncover, each with equally compelling motives. My thoughts:I would never have dreamed of paring Seagate and Miner as partners. I have a thing for the darker side of a character and I happen to like when a detective has real life problems on top of job pressures. It gives the book a gritty and more realistic feel. Karen is a woman struggling for respect in her male dominated profession, she is divorced, and has lost custody of her son. She has taken to indulging in booze as a way to cope which of course is not the answer. So, it almost seems ironical when she is paired with Minor, a fresh faced Mormon with a wife and kids, who lives life on the straight and narrow path. These detectives couldn't be more different from one another. It's a startling contrast and so I thought it was interesting. The detectives uncover a sordid game of politics, bribery, and big money which will eventually force the already troubled Seagate into a gut wrenching and controversial decision. However, Seagate with the staunch support of her partner will start to realize she has to pull it together because she has a son and no matter what she needs to be present for him.First books in a series are often difficult for me, and to my knowledge this is the first published book by this author. I had no idea what to expect. Setting characters up in what will most likely be recurring roles for future installments and still getting a crime solved is a difficult balance for even the most seasoned authors. Karen's personality and her problems almost overwhelmed the story is many cases, as her character was the most predominant. Some religious themes were in this one and I tend to shy away from those, but it was handled well, sticking the beliefs clearly onto the character, so it didn't become preachy. In fact Miner could be pretty funny. I thought the plot was an ambitious undertaking for a first in a series novel. It could have gotten out of control but the author kept it all on an even keel wrapping it all up and leaving us to wonder what will be next for this rather unconventional detective team. I have book two loaded up and ready to go! Overall this one gets 4 stars.See all 166 customer reviews... Obituaries Death Notices Newspaper Obituaries Online ...
