I love Mac, he is a great character with so much potential but for some reason the author felt the need to tear him apart and create a new Mac that has very little of the qualities we love him for. With Tain, he was put through a world of suffering but came out stronger; Mac comes out as a shadow of himself. The author has a very clear message she wants to convey and Mac pays the price. And really, in the context of this series it's really a quite odd one.There is a lot of plots and events in this book that seem very farfetched. Those that have read it - fx the very convenient actions of Niniane that is completely out if character. In general, the actions of the characters become tedious to the point of "lets repeat this action for the umpteenth time just to see if we can" rather than letting the characters learn and grow from their experience. Unlike the other books Mac's lady friend doesn't do anything to make her likeable or even to redeem herself. She is selfish and absolutely not someone I would have found worthy of Mac.And then there's the format of the book. I read it in Kindle android app. The font is horrible. And you cannot change it. It's horrible to a degree that makes the book hard to read and you have to enlarge the font to read it clearly. Maybe the author found it pretty, but if you choose a font that is not standard at least allow the reader the option of changing it to enhance the reading experience.And then there is the typos. Lots of them. How about this beauty: She'd've - uhm whatOverall, it's a huge disappointment. Mac was an excellent choice of hero for this book. I like the way the author transitioned him from an impish boy to a marvelously caring and committed man. The integration of life and death magic was skilfully done. Since I am a diehard optimist, I also love it when the hero manages to overcome overwhelming obstacles in spite of everything tossed at him. I guess one of my favorite things is how the author leaves the reader with the thought that even though sacrifices must be made in life, it's our response to or our attitude toward those sacrifices that is most important.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.3.5 with mixed feelingsBy Purple BookwormIf I could I would have given this a 3.5 alas I had to round up. Admittedly I haven't read the previous books so if I do I may change my review depending on the whole storyline. There were parts that annoyed me greatly and other parts were redeeming. The story was really a pendulum of emotions and magical abuse tinged with absurdity. Lol... I know vague but the female character was annoying with her laser focus on her goal and damn all else, but I guess if she wasn't so stubborn it would have been a short story.See all 64 customer reviews...
