Harvey"The Hart Brand " is set in New Mexico in 1896 ,and is narrated in flashback by "Caleb Hart" looking back to when ,as a 14 year old boy,he was sent by his parents from St Louis to ride for his uncle "Frank Hart",the owner of an imposing ranch in New Mexico.He finds his uncle to be a harsh ,unbending man who displays no favouritism to his young ,greenhorn relative ,and "Caleb"works as a ranch hand ,not in the more notionally romantic task of cowboying .He takes to the life with enthusuiasm and energy ,becoming popular with the cowhands ,especially "Kim Harrigan " and "Rex Steele"who become his guides and mentors.Trouble is brewing in the territory ,which is plagued by rustlers,and the big ranchers have banded together to form a stock grower's association ,headed by the eminent lawyer "Colonel Fountain" ,previously attorney for Billy the Kid.When he and his young son go missing it is widely assumed thay have been killed by the rustlers ."Frank Hart " favours very direct ,confrontational methods of dealing with the threat posed by rustlers ,and is brought into conflict with " Mary Magdalene Holliday" ,a widow whose husband was hung as a rustler by "Hart" and who forms a bond with young "Caleb" who by now has graduated to " riding for the brand".He becomes a sidekick to "Kim " who is revealed to be a crackshot and to have been a manhunter in the past.The story is essentially that of Caleb's growth to manhood and the way he deals with the conflict of loyalties between "Colonel Hart" and "Mary"The physiacl action is excellently described and the portrait of "Colonel Hart" is especially compelling ; he is an out of time tyrant ,whose unyielding attitudes put him on collision course with other ranchers and his own family ,but whose past accomplishments deserve the most profound respect and who is loyal to those whom he loves.Caleb is a strong narrative voice ,sympathetic and likeable ,and the package is rounded out by some fine descriptive writing and an incidentful narrative .The book is a strong Western ,maybe just a tad more conventional than other books by Mr Boggs but well repays time spent in its reading0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Count on BoggsBy LaBlueGreat read.
