There was something missing from this book despite having some great ingredients. I think perhaps my expectations were high because I wanted to read this h's story for so long. I think Ms Balogh did a great job with her background story and I was surprised by it. What didn't work for me I think was the way the relationship started between the two after the initial dislike, which was fun reading about.+++Spoilers+++After the initial confrontations and banter the two main characters enter into an affair and the romantic in me found it a bid bloodless. I also didn't make the connection from lust to love through the author's writing, which is so unusual as she is able to do it so well. In the the last book we had a dreadfully cold H but I saw how he fell in love with the h (in fact I went and reread bits this morning so I could understand why I didn't get it here). I liked the parts about the smugglers but I was a bit overwhelmed by all the animals. I don't know if it's just me but so many writers are using pets to pad out their books lately - it's becoming a bit tedious.Anyway having said all of this, I have already preordered the last in the series.14 of 15 people found the following review helpful.I love the hero of this book!!By Karen C McMillanOMG! This is perhaps the best book of The Survivors' Club! I absolutely adore Percy...I thought, about three-quarters through the book, that I'd marry him if Imogen didn't want him! It was satisfying to finally learn Imogen's story, to learn why she was so cool and aloof. I loved the secondary characters, and the "animal refuge" - and Hector the dog - was so sweet. I laughed out loud several times because Percy was so funny - with his Minerva Press thoughts and fantasies. I highly recommend this book. You don't have to read all The Survivors' Club stories to enjoy this one, of course, but be certain to read them afterwards! Am so looking forward to the last story in this series...how will I wait until May!1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.3.5 starsBy TracyJaneI liked this book better than the last one - but honestly these last 3 books have been a bit disappointing. The first 3 were outstanding and I loved them - but the next 3 - not so much. Don't misunderstand - the writing is great, the characters developed, the emotions well defined and believable. But something is missing.Imogen and Percy are both great characters - both are lost in their own way. What Imogen has been through is horrific. I at last understood why she always appeared so aloof in the other books. But while reading this book, I got angry with her, with her decisions, with her control and with her self centeredness - you might read the book and wonder why I would think this way - she just upset me. Who is she to decide her punishment What gives her the right to decide that she must live this way I think Vincent put it best when he told her - she has the right to be unhappy - but did she have the right to make others unhappy She did what she thought was best at the time - and I believe she did the right thing - no matter how heinous it was. I can only imagine the pain and guilt she had to bear. But at some point you have to forgive and move on. Instead she became a zombie.Percy on the other hand is all light and love. He is suffering from what can only be described as an early mid-life crisis. He is a good man and I liked him a lot. He was smart, funny and exactly the balm Imogen needed.I wouldn't read this book again - but I am glad I read it. And I look forward to George's book.See all 377 customer reviews...
