PratherDrogonsHells LefseHells Lefse brings us another whimsical tale featuring his dog Sven in Drogons. Whether the reader is familiar with any of the previous Sven tales or if this is their first experience, they will delight in the unique touches that Lefse uses to show that Sven is the master architect of the book. The book begins with a "puppylude" (prelude) and ends with a bedtime tale both told by Sven. These small additions do nothing to distract the reader from the reading, but certainly help the reader ease into the mindset of the work that they are about to read. Drawing from the Sagas of Scandinavian origin, Drogons, is set during WWII. The main characters of his saga are two social misfits, Ole and Sven, both ancestors of Lefse and Sven, the dog who writes the "puppylude" and bedtime story. Ole and Sven are unique characters who will be instantly likeable to readers. Readers will delight in their deep friendship and trust in one another as they join the misfit band of drogons to take down Hitler.Lefse expertly weaves together history with mythology by having his band consist of a Valkyrie, a troll, human and dog. Lefse knows both his history and his mythologies quite well. Just because the work is one of fiction, readers should not expect fiction when it comes to the very real evil and dangers of Hitler's regime. Lefse is able to show those horrors so very well by focusing on individuals. Woven throughout the story of the drogons coming into their own and fighting for justice is the character of Colonel Hammerbeck, a German soldier of both wars and his family. Through Hammerbeck, Lefse challenges the reader to see the humanity in the average German people and the position that they found themselves in. Although clearly a work of fiction, Hells Lefse's Drogons will teach the reader much about WWII and do so in a way that is engaging and interesting in ways that the average history book will fail. The short bedtime tale, "Pill-grams" told by the current Sven at the end of Drogons is pure comic genius and a nice way to end the work.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Professional Review by JaimeBy Jackie BuehrleHells Lefse begins his novel in pre-World War II Germany where the country is prospering and the citizens are hopeful. Suddenly, it's World War II and Kavan and Harald are fighting the war. Ole and Sven go on a hunt to find a box at Sander and Ethel's farm during a family reunion. The box is said to contain a leather-bound journal with an engraving of a ship that was part of his family's history. Harald's experiences in the war are re-counted in vivid imagery, and the reality of World War II, seen from a German's eyes, is saddening. He suffers wounds from an attack and is taken prisoner by the Russians and sent to a forced labor camp in Siberia. Kavan volunteers to serve on a German U-boat, something that most men fear. Kavan and Ole cross paths when Kavan's ship attacks Ole's and takes him and Sven, who managed to float on the trunk they were after, hostage. They dock at Norway, and Ole is released and sent to stay with relatives. Ole discovers the true origin of the journal when he meets Sommervin and they begin their quest to prove that the legend of the Drogons is real. Out at sea, they encounter a Valkryie and her two Drogons who are in charge of protecting Norway. The group collaborates in an unlikely union and they set out to restore order to the world in their U-630. Blending history and fantasy, Hells Lefse takes readers on a ride through what has been and what could be with characters dedicated to the preservation of humanity and creatures alike.See all 2 customer reviews...
