Jennifer Freyd, professor of psychology at the University of Oregon, is also the daughter of Peter and Pamela Freyd. Peter and Pamela Freyd are the founders of the False Memory Syndrome Foundation. Jennifer Freyd offers documented research in support of her thesis of Betrayal Trauma. The repression of trauma memories is very well documented. Jennifer Freyd's research provides significant evidence that those traumas that pose a physical threat to survival if the event is remembered are blocked from conscious memory. Incest is one such trauma that fits her thesis. A child is completely dependent on parents for survival. When a child is violated by a caregiver it is a logical survival strategy to forget the violation, at least until such a time that survival is no longer threatened if the attachment to the perpetrator is disrupted. In the False Memory vs. Repressed Memory debate, this book is an absolute must read.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful.A passionate piece of researchBy Paul WillisFreyd writes lucidly and passionately about her subject. The most compelling parts of the book are the case studies of recovered memory. She also provides some interesting background research on how memory works. I would say that I broadly agree with her findings but where the book falls down is in its attempts to show the truth of recovered memory through statistical studies. In this case there just doesn't seem like there's enough data to really say for certain that incest survivors are more likely to forget and then remember abuse than other abuse victims and it appears like she's over-reaching when she draws conclusions to this effect. On the whole though I think she makes a strong, well-argued case.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.WonderfulBy Rosemary B.This is an accessible and pivotal piece of literature for those of us who study trauma. It is so inspiring to talk to clinicians about betrayal trauma theory, and hear them say, "Yes!! We see this all the time and now it has a name." A must read.See all 18 customer reviews...
